Key Club International
The CNH district is one of the many districts which make up Key Club International (you should be noticing a distinct hierarchy here). Key Club International chartered its first club on May 7, 1925 in Sacramento, California and was sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Sacramento. Key Club is one of the oldest and largest international service programs for high school students. The name "Key Club" was derived from the key students from Sacramento High School that formed the first Key Club. The idea of Key Club spread all the way to Florida by 1939, and many Key Clubs were formed there. The increasing amount of Key Clubs forming started the national organization of Key Club in 1943. Key Club soon spread to Canada which then led to the establishment of Key Club in approximately fourteen other countries. Throughout the world, there are currently more than 4,700 clubs divided into 31 districts.

The idea of uniting Key Clubs through a common service goal helping children was derived from Key Club International's first convention in 1946. Today, this tradition is carried out through the Major Emphasis Program (MEP), which changes every two years. The 2012 - 2014 MEP is "Project Jump Start." This initiative targets benefiting children who are in their first 5 years of life, which is the most crucial time to make a positive impact on a child. Franklin Key Club has participated in the MEP through participating in events that are focused towards families and helping the young ones have a great time.

Key Club International Partners with several charities to help accomplish the goals of the Major Emphasis Program. There are three preferred charities that Key Club International partners with that we are very happy to support:

March of Dimes - an organization seeking to prevent birth defects and infant mortality. One way to serve this organization is to volunteer, participate, or fundraise for MOD's annual WalkAmerica, which combats premature births.

UNICEF - stands for the United Nation Children's Fund and currently, the theme and partnership Key Club International maintains with UNICEF is the "Kick HIV/AIDS Out of Kenya." This initiative funds for a soccer program for female students in Kenya to promote an after-school activity and abstinence. To date, since 2005, Franklin has donated $400 towards UNICEF.

Children's Miracle Network - a network of hospitals dealing with children and their expensive medical attention. Our local hospital involved in this network is the UC Davis Children's Hospital, and in the past, we have written and drawn cards for the children of the hospital.

Kiwanis International
All Key Clubs are sponsored by a Kiwanis Club. Kiwanis International was founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan, originally to promote business exchanges. In a few years, though, the club re-aligned its focus to be a service-oriented club, like it is today. It grew to encompass countries outside the US and Canada in 1962, and now Kiwanis has spread its influence to the entire world. Besides Key Club, Kiwanis also sponsors K-Kids, Builders Club, Circle K, KIWIN'S, and Aktion Club. Along with Key Club, there are Sponsored Organizations and Programs (SOAPs). Once a year, Kiwanians and every constituent of the SOAP, gather together on a division-wide scale for a unified day of service known as Total K Day.

Franklin Key Club's Kiwanian sponsor is the Kiwanis Club of Greater Sacramento (chartered April 3, 2003); our Kiwanis advisor is Al Ortega. The Kiwanis Club of Greater Sacramento formed when the Kiwanis Club of Sacramento, American River merged with the Kiwanis Club of Greater Sacramento. The club meets every Thursday for breakfast at Coco's Family Restaurant. Many thanks to them it is their sponsorship which allows our club to exist.

The Kiwanis Family House is a project our local Kiwanians, as well as many SOAP constituents, are currently involved in. Located next to the UC Davis Medical Center, it is a temporary residence for the families of ill and injured children currently being treated at said Medical Center. The establishment of this benevolent facility would not have been possible without the essential work of its volunteers, something for which the Kiwanians and all of us, too should be proud. The Kiwanians of the Kiwanis Family House continue to require volunteer work on a regular basis and, for such a noble cause as this, we're more than happy to oblige them!
